The One Interview Question I'd Keep: 'Tell Me About The Last Quarter You Missed.'

"Tell me about the last quarter you missed." That's the interview question I'd run if I could only run one. Not the biggest deal. Not the toughest cycle. The last miss — and then four follow-ups.

The four follow-ups

1. What was the number, and what did you close? The delta matters. 92% of quota on a fair patch is one story. 61% is another.

2. Who found out first, and how? Did the VP hear it on the forecast call, or in a Slack DM the Wednesday before? The best AEs raise a hand early. The ones who don't are the ones who miss twice.

3. What did you change the following quarter? Not "worked harder" — a specific change: pipe-cover threshold, top-of-funnel motion, deal reviews, a patch swap. If they can't name one, they either weren't accountable for the miss or didn't understand it.

4. Who at the company knows you missed that quarter? References who lived through a miss with someone are worth more than references from a good year.

Every CRO asks about the biggest win.
I've never once seen a hiring decision made or unmade on the answer.

Why the miss tells you more

The miss tells you what you actually need to know. Do they own it. Can they diagnose it. Did they change something. And can you talk to someone who watched them do it. Ask the four questions, then decide.

We build interview loops that actually predict performance.

Hiring an AE or a sales leader? We'll help you run the loop that de-risks it.
